The Extinguisher Every Commercial Kitchen Needs

Cooking oil and grease fires burn too hot for an ordinary extinguisher, and water makes them worse. That is why NFPA 10 requires a Class K wet chemical extinguisher in commercial kitchens. Spartan Fire Protection supplies, installs and services Class K extinguishers for restaurants, hotels, schools and medical facilities across Houston, Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, Spring, The Woodlands, Pasadena, Pearland and the rest of Greater Houston.

Houston has thousands of restaurants, and every one of them gets checked for a current, properly placed Class K extinguisher. We make sure yours passes.

How a Class K Extinguisher Works

A Class K extinguisher sprays a fine mist of wet chemical agent that cools the burning oil and forms a soapy layer on its surface, which smothers the fire and keeps it from flaring back. Staff need to know where it is and how to use it, so we can walk your kitchen team through it.

  • Made for cooking oil and grease fires
  • Placed close to the fryers and griddles
  • Tagged and logged every year
  • Staff training available

Class K Fire Extinguisher Questions

Does my restaurant need a Class K fire extinguisher?

Yes. NFPA 10 requires a Class K extinguisher in commercial kitchens that cook with vegetable or animal oils and fats, placed within a short distance of the cooking appliances.

Can I use an ABC extinguisher on a grease fire?

An ABC extinguisher is not designed for cooking oil fires and can spread burning grease. Kitchens need a Class K extinguisher for the cooking line, and ABC units for the rest of the space.

How often does a Class K extinguisher need service?

It needs an annual inspection, a recharge after any use, and a hydrostatic test every 5 years. We track all of it for you.
